Adebayo Akinfenwa's FIFA Ultimate Team of the Year

Posted January 8th at 1:23pm.

EA SPORTS: Can you run through your FIFA Ultimate Team Team of The Year and explain your choices?
Adebayo Akinfenwa:
My goalie would be Neuer, I think goalies need to be crazy and I think he’s the craziest of them all. He’s a sweeper, he’s not even really a goalie, he’s one of the best defenders around! He’s a great shot-stopper and he’s commanding so Neuer’s my goalie.

My back four, starting with my left back, Jordi Alba. I watched him, and he is quick for days. They keep talking about the fact that defenders need to be big but I think he shows that you don’t have to be big. He gets up and down, and I’m a massive fan of his.

My two centre backs: Vincent Kompany is one. Not really much I need to say about him, he’s a man-mountain and he’s a leader. Then Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid. Also again, man-mountain, leader, puts his body on the line and you need that.

Then my right back is Philip Lahm. The only word you can use to describe him is class. I think he’s about that life. World Cup winner… there’s not really anything he hasn’t done! He carries himself with so much distinction, so Philip Lahm.

Now I’m going to go in to my midfield where I’ve got three in there. I’ll start with my defensive midfielder and that’s Paul Pogba. Again, I think he’s just a beast, an utter beast! He get’s up and down, scores goals, he just strikes fear in to you. Pogba’s up there and he’s young so he’s only going to get better. Then I’ve got two wizards either side of him. I’ve got Hazard and Iniesta. I’ll start with Hazard, he’s a wizard on the ball, he’s only getting better and better and he’ll be up there with the best players in the world. Then Iniesta, some people may talk about his age but I think he’s a dream. I think he’s proper decent.

Then my front three: Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s perfection. I can’t even speak highly enough of Ronaldo. The other side of him is Lionel Messi, another one who’s just perfection. Perfection times two! Those two play football like they’re playing in the playground, like they’re playing against school kids. Then last but not least, my final striker is Sergio Aguero. I just think he’s getting better and better. He guarantees goals, guarantees hard work and I just think he’s a good team player and gets you goals, so my front three would be outscoring anyone I can tell you that now! So that’s my team.

EA SPORTS: Who is your personal favourite player in that eleven?
AA: My mind is saying Messi but my heart is saying Ronaldo. I’m going to have to go with Ronaldo.

EA SPORTS: Who is your personal favourite player on FIFA 15?
AA: I would say me but that’s a lie. To be fair I like Yaya Toure. He’s a beast – I like beasts! I like people who are all about strength and power – straight up BMO! That’s my mantra so I’d say I’m a Yaya Toure fan.

EA SPORTS: How many members of your FUT TOTY do you think you could bench press?
AA: All of them! 100%. Maybe do it four at a time, the four at the back. I’d bench press them all to be fair, I’m strong in that department.

EA SPORTS: Out of that XI, who do you think would provide strongest competition in an arm wrestle?
AA: I would like to take on Kompany, because he’s got that mantra and aura where he’s about strength. I don’t think he would take me if I’m honest. I know I would beat him but major love to him. I’ll give it to Kompany because the rest I don’t think would even be competition.

EA SPORTS: As we know, you are the strongest player on FIFA 15. How does it feel to be a FUT cult hero?
AA: It’s an achievement, I’m telling you now. I feel blessed and honoured. I’m not going to lie to you, I never got to the promise land of the Premier League but in many of the teams I’m playing alongside Ronaldo and Messi so I can’t complain! It’s a major achievement and a major honour.

EA SPORTS: Has anyone ever recognised you in the street and started talking to you about FIFA?
AA:Oh yes! To be fair this is how powerful FIFA is; that happened in LA! We went away this year and we were returning a car. I had a BMO top on and the two people that took the car back said: "Do you know BMO? Where are you from?" and I was like "London" and he said "Akinfenwa does that". My brother was like "you know that’s Akinfenwa" and they lost their minds! It was the most surreal feeling, I’m in LA and these kids are losing their mind because they’ve met Akinfenwa. So shout out to EA for that love.

EA SPORTS: How has FIFA impacted your professional career?
AA: Massively! I queue-jump now, I don’t really have to line up for many places. And when I go out I get recognised. It’s massive for me. Like I said I’ve never got to the Premier League but I’ll be around Premier League football players. I think they did a poll where I was one of the most well known players outside of the Premier League. I now have over 110,000 twitter followers – but I’m still not verified. I ran a campaign and it went on for weeks and twitter still for some reason do not want to verify me! Twitter, I’ve got love for you, but show me some love and give me the blue tick!

EA SPORTS: Who would be your dream manager of your FUT XI?
AA: Of current managers now you’d have to say Jose Mourinho. We played Chelsea in a pre-season friendly and his aura – and there’s not many people I get intimidated by, or not even get intimidated by but I want to take a picture with, and I wanted to try and take a picture with him – but he’s got that aura and that charisma so I’d have to say Mourinho.

EA SPORTS: As the undisputed heavyweight champion of FIFA 15, is strength one of the first things you look at when picking your ultimate team?
AA: Yes and no. I think I like pace, because it’s something EA have shown me to have a lack of! Pace and strength are the two attributes that I’d look for.

EA SPORTS: Talk through your stats, you have 50 pace, 58 shooting, 53 passing, 61 dribbling, 34 defence and then a big BMO 78 on the physical.
AA: I was beefing about the pace before but you jumped me up two, I was 48, so at least I’m half way now. But if you see my defensive capabilities, I come back and I win a lot of headers in the box so that needs to go up next time. Send the word out that I need at least 50. From now on I need at least 50 on everything, just so it’s half, because half is okay.

EA SPORTS: Do you play as yourself on FIFA?
AA: Yes I actually do now. I didn’t before because I used to get mad at myself because I was very slow but now on FIFA 15 I play as myself a lot because I’m strong and I’ve got a very good shot, so I’m okay with that.

EA SPORTS: On the subject of that strength, how do you keep in shape? Do you have a diet and an exercise regime?
AA: Yes, especially as I’ve gotten older, I have to watch what I eat more. People say it’s the chicken diet. I’m a big fan of chicken but I do watch what I eat. I enjoy the fitness side of it. I am vigorous in the gym. Three or four times a week I’m in the gym because I enjoy it. We’ve got the BMO workout and my whole gym routine comes around the BMO track. The beast mode track gets me ready for games, gets me ready for the gym, I’m actually on the song. It gets you ready for a workout and that’s what I do to stay in shape.

EA SPORTS: Thanks for your time
AA: No problem.
